Sudafrica Shark Dive
THE EXPEDITION:
As is well known, South Africa is one of the best dive sites in the world thanks to the confluence of two important currents, the warm current of Agulhas which flows from the Indian coasts to the eastern African side (Indian Ocean) and the cold current of the Benguela that flows from the west coast of South Africa and Namibia to the north and northwest.
From this “meeting”, bearer of a complete nutrient, an ecosystem and a biodiversity of considerable richness was born: from molluscs and mussels that favor the presence of colorful nudibranchs (over 80 species have been estimated), to the coral that takes root and develops especially in those areas declared “marine protected areas”, up to a constant presence of the pelagic, these are sharks and marine mammals, which together form the core of the food chain.
The diving area is located on the South African Wild Coast facing the Indian Ocean in the province of KwaZulu-Natal and more precisely the site will be the Aliwal Shoal.
This reef is famous for the concentration of hard and soft coral, for the variety of tropical and subtropical fish and for the presence of various species of shark, but it is primarily famous for the presence of the shark rays or bull sharks (Charcarias Taurus).
In this period of the year in addition to this species, there will be the opportunity to admire the Tiger Shark (Galeocerdo cuvier), the Blacktip (Carcharhinus limbatus), the Bronze Whaler (Carcharhinus brachyurus), Leuca Shark (Carcharhinus leucas) and many others.
There will be the possibility to dive in the current and for this reason a good management of the trim is required; the maximum depth is 18/20 m except in some sites where you will touch the 30 m. Among the 10 most famous dive sites in the world this reef has all the ideal features to live a dive different from the usual.
It is highly appreciated by all underwater photographers, both professional and amateur, as well as for the reef, especially for the concentration of sharks throughout all dives.
