Discover Aliwal Shoal: The shark paradise (category: in the water)
Aliwal Shoal, located off the Wild Coast of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, is one of the world’s most renowned and captivating dive sites. This area is defined by the meeting of two major ocean currents—the warm Agulhas and the cold Benguela—which create a rich underwater ecosystem teeming with biodiversity. The nutrient-rich waters attract a vast array of marine species, including over 80 species of nudibranchs, vibrant corals, and a wide variety of pelagic fish, among them many species of sharks.
Diving enthusiasts can explore a unique underwater world inhabited by more than 100 shark species and numerous marine mammals. Aliwal Shoal is famous for its close encounters with large sharks, including the majestic ragged-tooth shark (Carcharias taurus), tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier), blacktip shark (Carcharhinus limbatus), bronze whaler (Carcharhinus brachyurus), and bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas). With its incredible shark diversity and colorful coral gardens, Aliwal Shoal is considered one of the top ten dive sites in the world.
With depths ranging from 18 to 30 meters, the site is ideal for experienced divers, though good buoyancy control is essential due to the strong currents. This diving experience offers breathtaking underwater scenery and a direct connection to the wild. Aliwal Shoal is a must-visit for those seeking a thrilling and memorable underwater adventure.
