Itinerario
DAY 1
Departure
Departure from the country of origin with international flight, arriving in Anchorage (Alaska-USA); considering that the time zone will make you gain 10 hours, it is necessary to plan for arrival within the same day. Overnight stay at Hotel Comfort Suites or similar.
DAY 2
Anchorage – Valdez
Leaving Anchorage behind, you head north on the Glenn Highway, and in less than half an hour you will reach several interesting sites: Thunderbird Falls, the village of Eklutna, where you can discover native culture, Chitina, the Matanuska River and its glacier, the typical village of Copper Center. Evening arrival in Valdez. Overnight stay at Best Western Valdez Harbor Inn or similar.
DAY 3
Valdez
The town is located at the end of a fjord, on the eastern side of Prince William Sound, at the end of Valdez Bay. It is surrounded by the Chugach Mountains, characterized by numerous glaciers and peaks reaching heights of 2,100 meters. Among these, Columbia Glacier is one of the most notable: it can only be admired through boat or helicopter excursions from Valdez (optional paid excursion).
Despite being the northernmost port in North America, Valdez remains ice-free year-round. Additionally, it represents the northernmost point of the Pacific coastal forest.
During the day, we will visit the town and make a stop at a company specializing in salmon processing. Here, it will be possible to spot bears on the nearby beach. The area is extremely picturesque and offers numerous opportunities to take beautiful photographs.
Overnight stay at the Best Western Valdez Harbor Inn or similar accommodation.
DAY 4
Valdez – Kennicott
With the continued use of cars, we depart from Valdez heading towards Kennicott, passing through McCarthy Road, an extremely scenic and difficult dirt road, crossing old wooden bridges adjacent to the old railway. Kennicott with its abandoned copper mine is bordered by Root Glacier. Kennicott is a very distinctive mining village, where almost all homes and buildings revolved around the life of the mine and everything is very well restored, even though Kennicott and McCarthy quickly became "ghost towns" after the Kennicott Copper Corporation abandoned mining operations.
Overnight stay at Kennicott Glacier Lodge (shared facilities)
If weather conditions are adverse and McCarthy Road becomes impassable, the daily program may be modified.
DAY 5
Kennicott - Tok
After visiting the Kennicott copper mine, the itinerary will lead along Kluane N.P., one of the most beautiful parks in Canada, to also admire lakes that host the famous Kokanee Salmon; arrival in Tok.
At Tok you will cross the famous Alaska Hwy, 1500 miles of history; begun in the spring of 1942 at Dawson Creek and officially completed in 1918 at Delta Jct. Overnight stay at Caribou Cabins or similar.
DAY 6
Tok
Tok – Haines Junction Transfer stage and crossing the border into Canada at Beaver Creek. Overnight stay at Alcan Motor Inn or similar.
DAY 7
Haines junction -Haines
Upon arrival in Haines, effectively re-entering Alaska, the day will be dedicated to visiting the small town, taking time to admire the bears that frequent a very "appetizing" area - the site is TOP SECRET!
Overnight stay at Captain Choice or similar.
DAY 8
Haines – Juneau
In the morning, ferry from Haines to Juneau; during the transfer there will be the opportunity to observe wildlife such as whales and orcas in addition to the beautiful landscape.
Overnight stay at Alaska's Capital Inn Bed and Breakfast or similar.
DAY 9
Juneau
The day will be dedicated to whale watching activities among orcas and whales that populate this area of British Columbia; the tour will last approximately 3 - 4 hours.
It will take little time after leaving the bay to reach the first whale and orca observation areas. Obviously, sightings are not guaranteed since these are animals in the wild (a snack on board is provided).
The rest of the day is free for visiting the town.
Overnight stay at Alaska's Capital Inn Bed and Breakfast or similar.
DAY 10
Juneau
Day dedicated to one of the most beautiful excursions in the area, the Mendenhall Lake Kayak Adventure; the guided kayak tour of the glacier will allow you to enjoy a very different perspective compared to other tours. You will board a 2-person kayak on Mendenhall Lake and begin paddling in front of the glacier accompanied by a local guide. Permits for kayaking on the lake are extremely limited, making this experience of primary importance and absolutely exclusive.
The tour lasts approximately 3 hours. In the afternoon, another exciting activity: helicopter flight and landing on the glacier with a short trek, lasting about 2 hours.
Overnight stay at Alaska's Capital Inn Bed and Breakfast or similar.
