A journey through Iceland in March along the Ring Road No. 1 offers an unforgettable experience among breathtaking landscapes and unique natural phenomena. Aboard our van, starting from Reykjavík, the northernmost capital in the world, the adventure begins with an exploration of the famous Golden Circle, then continues along the ring road that encircles the island.
Golden Circle
The first stop is Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of great historical and geological importance. Here, in 930 AD, the Alþingi—one of the world’s oldest parliaments—was established. The park also lies on the rift between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, offering spectacular views. The journey continues to the geothermal area of Geysir, where the Strokkur geyser erupts with columns of hot water every few minutes. Lastly, the majestic Gullfoss waterfall, with its powerful cascades, completes the Golden Circle tour.
Ring Road No. 1
After the Golden Circle, we enter the Ring Road No. 1, a route of about 1,330 kilometers that circles around Iceland, touching many of its natural wonders. In March, it's essential to monitor road and weather conditions, as the climate can be unpredictable.
South Coast
Along the south coast, you’ll encounter the spectacular Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls. Continuing on, you reach the black sand beach of Reynisfjara, near the village of Vík í Mýrdal, famous for its basalt columns and the powerful Atlantic waves.
Vatnajökull National Park
Heading east, we enter Vatnajökull National Park, home to the glacier of the same name—the largest in Europe. Here, the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon offers breathtaking views of floating icebergs, while nearby Diamond Beach showcases glittering ice blocks scattered across the black sand.
East Fjords
Continuing along the Ring Road, you pass through the picturesque East Fjords, characterized by charming fishing villages and stunning vistas. In March, some inland roads may be closed, so it's advisable to check road conditions in advance.
North Iceland
In the north, the city of Akureyri offers a welcoming urban atmosphere. Nearby, the Lake Mývatn area features lava formations, hot springs, and rich birdlife. The Goðafoss waterfall—known as the “waterfall of the gods”—is another unmissable stop.
Return to Reykjavík
Completing the loop, you return to Reykjavík, where you can relax in the local geothermal pools and reflect on the incredible experiences of the journey.
Final Thoughts
Traveling in Iceland in March requires preparation and flexibility due to the variable weather conditions. However, it also offers the chance to witness the Northern Lights and explore the island with fewer tourists around.

Itinerario
DAY 1
Arrival in Iceland
Arrival in Iceland with flight from country of origin to Keflavik airport where you will find the Explora Expedition team leader, hotel check-in, brief visit of Reykjavik, overnight stay at the hotel.
DAY 2
Geyser – Vik
It's time to head towards the Golden Circle, the most touristy itinerary of the entire island but nonetheless fascinating.
We will visit Thingvellir, today a national park, yesterday the seat of Europe's first democratic parliament. Also famous from a geological point of view, as it is here that the American and European continents separate and the tectonic plates are visible.
Afterward, we will see one of the natural phenomena that characterizes Iceland in the common imagination: the Geysers.
Strokkur is a geyser that erupts on average every 10 minutes, creating amazement every time among the tourists in its presence.
Finally, we will visit Gullfoss, the golden waterfall, one of the most famous and spectacular waterfalls in Iceland.
We will resume our journey on the legendary Route 1, which crosses the entire island. We will admire one of the most famous waterfalls in the world: Seljalandsfoss, behind which it will be possible to walk.
We will also see a small enchantment that not everyone knows about: the hidden waterfall.
Our day will end with one of the undisputed protagonists of the island: Skogafoss, so beautiful that it convinced Lonely Planet to use it as the cover of their famous travelers' guide. Evening arrival in the vicinity of Vik and overnight stay.
DAY 3
Vik – Dyrholaey – Reynisfjara – Fjaðrárgljúfur – Lagune glaciali – Diamond Beach – Jökulsárlón
Our day will begin with a visit to the Dyrholaey promontory, 120 meters high near the town of Vik í Mýrdal. This promontory takes its name from the gigantic rock arch that the sea has created by slowly eroding the coast.
Dyrholaey literally means "the door hole." If we are lucky, we will meet the mythical Puffins, the sea parrots.
Then it will be time for the black beach of Reynisfjara, an internationally known black sand beach right next to Vik í Mýrdal. A unique beach in the world, with its sea stacks and basalt on the rocky wall.
After lunch in Vik bay, we will cross the desolate eastern area passing through very green moss-covered lava fields, up to the most unpronounceable canyon in Iceland:
Fjaðrárgljúfur, near the most unpronounceable village in Iceland: Kirkjubæjarklaustur.
We will also visit the two famous glacier lagoons, in whose calm waters float the icebergs that break off from the great glacier. You will feel like reliving the scenes from the Hollywood movie Interstellar, shot a few years ago in this national park.
We will also walk on Diamond Beach, where sparkling blocks of ice rest on the black sand.
In the evening, arrival near the Jökulsárlón glacier for overnight stay.
DAY 4
Hofn – Vatnajökull – Vestrahorn – Fiordi orientali
Day dedicated to the largest glacier in Europe. Today we will have the fortune to see up close the Vatnajökull, the fourth largest ice mass in the world. We will take you to admire one of its moraines in a secret spot, where we will enjoy the silence and the images in front of us.
We will dedicate the necessary time to visit one of the most photographed locations in Iceland: the Vestrahorn mountain, the lagoon, the beach and the Viking village.
In the late afternoon, we will reach our cottages on the eastern fjords.
Overnight stay along the eastern fjords – Höfn.
DAY 5
Stuðlagil – Dettifoss – Myvatn
After a hearty breakfast, we will resume our journey. About 30 minutes away, we will leave the Ring Road to reach a farm along a dirt track. From here, our trek will begin towards a magical place, the Stuðlagil Basalt Canyon. We will walk on a cobbled and sometimes slippery path; before reaching the bottom, we will see incredible landscapes and a volcanic waterfall.
The glacial river that flows powerfully along the canyon and the dozens of black basalt columns make this place unique in the world. The trek will take us about 3 hours, until we reach the most powerful waterfall in Europe, Dettifoss.
This is situated in a completely deserted lunar landscape and has a drop of 45 meters in height and 100 in width! In the evening, arrival at Myvatn, a well-known thermal location, for overnight stay.
DAY 6
Myvatn – Bagni Termali – Godafoss – Akureyri
Today we will have the pleasure of visiting the spectacular promontories of Myvatn. We will see a geothermal area with active fumaroles, we will walk where the ground is really hot, crossing smoking vents, boiling mud pools and steam vents. We will then descend into a small lava cave with turquoise waters and admire the caldera of an inactive volcano. It will be like landing on another planet!
After lunch, finally the well-deserved break at the Myvatn thermal baths, where we will relax for a few hours.
Everyone knows the Blue Lagoon because it is part of Iceland's most touristy circuit, but on this itinerary we will have the fortune to bathe in these thermal pools, much less touristy, but more beautiful and evocative.
You find yourself surrounded by a wonderful panorama, inside very hot water pools, almost with the impression of being soaked inside a volcano. Moreover, the view of the lake is wonderful!
Today's last stop will be Godafoss, the Waterfall of the Gods, one of the most beautiful in Iceland.
Overnight stay in Akureyri. Arrival in Akureyri and free evening.
DAY 7
Grundarfjörður – Glaumbaer – Bifröst
Early morning departure towards Grundarfjörður. Stop at the small village of Glaumbaer, typical for its small houses with grass on the roofs. Grundarfjörður is an Icelandic municipality in the Vesturland region. Arrival in the late afternoon at Bifröst for the last overnight stay.
